Bookkeeping
Without a good bookkeeper it will be hard to have an accurate picture of how your business is performing on a day to day basis.
A good bookkeeper will enable you to better manage your cash flow.
It is important to make sure that customer invoices are sent as soon as possible & that they are paid on time.
You need to be able to see how much money you owe & when this is due, by keeping a close eye on this, you may be able to take advantage of prompt payment discounts.
This will then give you a clear picture of your cash balances, you will be able to collect money from customers more efficiently & you will never be taken by surprise at what you owe each month.
I can take this administrative burden away from you, so you can concentrate on what you are good at, running your business. This is especially worthwhile in the early stages of setting up your business, you can concentrate on business development & be confident that the bookkeeping is being taken care of.
I can also deal with all of the associated tasks such as vat returns & cis returns.
I can do as much or as little of the above as necessary, some clients prefer to do the bookkeeping themselves & only need me to submit a vat return, others prefer to give me the paperwork to process for them.
There are a variety of software packages I can use, depending on the volume of transactions, the level of detail needed & the cost. Most are cloud based, so you could log in at any time & see how your business is performing.
I can work remotely from my office, at your premises or a mixture of both.

VAT Returns
Vat registered businesses are unpaid tax collectors & are obliged to accurately account for the vat collected.
For start up businesses, I can give you advice on the timing of the initial registration for vat. There are various vat schemes to choose from, together we can select the one most beneficial to your business.
It is now mandatory for businesses to submit their vat returns under the HMRC scheme ‘making tax digital’ (MTD). This means the vat returns must be submitted using HMRC compatible software. All of the packages I use are fully compliant. Together we can select the software package most appropriate for your business needs.
I have over 20 years of experience in preparing vat returns & dealing with vat enquiries from HMRC. I can take the burden of preparing the vat returns away from you, to leave you to concentrate on growing your business knowing that the returns will be submitted correctly & on time, thus avoiding any penalties.
I can work remotely from my office, at your premises or a mixture of both.

CIS (Construction Industry Scheme)
This is a scheme that applies to the construction industry, whereby contractors deduct tax from payments they make to a subcontractor & pay the money directly to HMRC.
You must register as a contractor before you take on your first subcontractor & it is beneficial to register if you are a subcontractor.
The scheme puts a large administrative burden on businesses, monthly returns must be sent to HMRC, deductions must be calculated correctly & paid to HMRC within set deadlines, monthly subcontractor statements must be sent & every new subcontractor must be verified with HMRC.
There are other points to consider, should the new subcontractor be an employee or are you treating them correctly as a subcontractor? What type of subcontractor falls within the scheme & what type doesn’t?
HMRC will issue penalties for non compliance, so it is important that everything is done correctly.
If you are a subcontractor that has had CIS tax deducted you may need to complete a tax return at the end of the year, many subcontractors find they have paid too much tax & can apply for a tax refund shortly after the tax year end on 5th April. I can prepare your tax return if this applies to you & ensure you receive your refund from HMRC as quickly as possible.
I have many years of experience in dealing with CIS schemes & I can manage this for you, ensuring that you are fully complaint with the rules. I can also advise & help with setting up a CIS scheme.
Please get in touch to discuss how I can help you.
I can work remotely from my office, at your premises or a mixture of both.

Management Accounts, Cashflow Statements & Budgeting
Regular management accounts can be invaluable in helping you to grow your business.
I can tailor your management accounts in such a way that helps you to identify success & problem areas of your business.
Some examples are;
- Compare sales by location, type of product or by salesperson
- Compare the costs relating to the sales as above
This would enable you to see profitable areas & identify high cost areas which could then be investigated further.
- Salary & overtime payments.
Are the overtime payments worthwhile? Have sales increased in line with the payments?
- Cash balances
Does the business have enough cash on a daily basis? If this is a problem, why? Are debtors taking too long to pay, & why is this?
Cashflow statements will show the amount of cash flowing in & out of the business. It will identify any problem areas for example you could be paying your suppliers within 30 days, yet your customers are not paying you until 60 days. This may result in additional costs to you as you need to borrow to meet the shortfall. Cashflow statements can help identify problem areas which may be hindering the growth of your business.
Budgeting is a useful tool to keep control of your income & costs. I can help you choose the best software, enter your budget figures, prepare management accounts & you will instantly be able to see any variances. These may be expected but often they are not, by keeping control in this way you can address any issues promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if an accountant is qualified & why does it matter?
The term accountant isn’t regulated, and anyone can call themselves an accountant.
Most qualified accountants in England are members of one of the following bodies;
- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA or FCCA)
- Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ACA or FCA)
- Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland/Ireland (CA/ICA)
An accountant that is a member of one of these bodies must practice under the rules and standards set by the professional bodies. The client is able to go back to these bodies should the accountant not provide a satisfactory service.
They are required to hold a practicing certificate, for which they have to prove they have the necessary experience & training. They must continue with their training & make an annual return to the professional bodies to show they have done this. They must also have professional indemnity insurance.
